Antonio Orvieto awarded ETH Silver Medal

In recognition of his exceptional doctoral thesis, Antonio Orvieto will receive the Silver Medal of ETH Zurich and a financial prize. The prize will be awarded at the upcoming doctoral awards ceremony on 24 January 2025.
Antonio Orvieto carried out his doctoral research under the supervision of Thomas Hofmann at the Department of Computer Science (D-INFK), ETH Zurich and wrote his thesis on "Dynamics of Adaptive Momentum Optimizers on Challenging Deep Learning Landscapes". He is one of five D-INFK doctoral graduates to receive an ETH Silver Medal this year.
In Fall 2023, Antonio took up a position as a principal investigator (PI) at the ELLIS Institute Tübingen and independent group leader at the MPI for Intelligent Systems, leading the Deep Models and Optimization group. His goal is to improve efficiency and accessibility of deep learning technologies in science and engineering by pioneering new architectures and training techniques grounded in theoretical knowledge. He joined CLS as an associate faculty member in September 2023.
