Joint Alumni Event at MPI-IS Tübingen

2026 marks the 25th anniversary of the Empirical Inference Department at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems. To celebrate this occasion, and to reflect the long-standing collaboration between the CLS and ELLIS PhD programmes and the Empirical Inference Department, alumni of the department and these initiatives were welcomed back to Tübingen for a special reunion event on August 30, 2026. The event featured alumni presentations, panel discussions, and plenty of opportunities for scientific exchange and networking.

Hosted by the Head of the Empirical Inference Department, Bernhard Schölkopf, the event coincided with the 50th Machine Learning Summer School (MLSS 2026), taking place in Tübingen from 30 August to 12 September 2026 in the newly built Max Planck House. Depicted: CLS alumnus Giambattista Parascandolo in discussion with his CLS advisors Thomas Hofmann and Bernhard Schökopf.

Forty participants heard about the different paths our alumni have taken. It was a fantastic opportunity to exchange ideas across academia and industry, re-connect with old friends and establish new connections.
