S4 Workshop: Best Practices for Supervision of BA & Master's Students

This training is designed to help guide our doctoral researchers on how to become effective supervisors as many of them begin to supervise others for the first time during the doctorate.

What are standard student supervision practices? How much time should a supervisor devote to one student? Beginning this process for the first time can be demanding.
The supervisory role is also sometimes be challenging due to different ethnic, cultural, linguistic, and educational backgrounds amongst team members.
The goal of this training is to offer our supervising scholars with strategies for proper supervision. The training describes the ways in which supervisors can support and engage students while still balancing their other professional demands. It will also elaborate on ways in which to develop routines that will aid in the creation of an effective and efficient working relationship.
More about our Trainer: Paul-Christian Bürkner is statistician with a focus on probabilistic (Bayesian) methods currently working as a Full Professor for Computational Statistics at the Department of Statistics, TU Dortmund University. Having originally studied psychology and mathematics, his core research is nowadays located somewhere between statistics and machine learning, with applications in almost all quantitative sciences. Paul has extensive experience supervising Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral students. He also has seen much success in coaching his doctoral students on ways in which to properly supervise students of their own.
