During 26 - 28 June 2023, thirty CLS doctoral and postdoctoral fellows joined CLS Co-Directors Bernhard Schölkopf and Niao He at the CLS 2023 Fellows Retreat. The event team put together a very diverse program designed to help participants connect and exchange about current and future goals.
For the scientific program, talks and posters from the CLS doctoral and postdoctoral researchers were complemented by talks from invited faculty Stelian Coros (Head of the Computational Robotics Lab, ETH Zurich), Christoph Keplinger (Head of the Robotic Materials Department, MPI-IS) Ksenia Keplinger (Head of the Organizational Leadership & Diversity Group, MPI-IS) and Celestine Mendler-Dünner (Research group leader in the Department for Social Foundations of Computation, MPI-IS).
The program further featured industry talks, a panel discussion on industry and academia and a coaching session on the topic of strength discovery: awareness of collective and individual strengths. There was also time to connect more informally during a hike, pub quiz and games night.
This event was the first CLS retreat to be held in Switzerland since 2017. The retreat venue, the historic Jugenstil Hotel Pax Montana, is located in the hamlet of Flüeli-Ranft, about 25 km from Lucerne and around one hour’s drive from Zurich. It formed a beautiful, calm and inspiring location for our event, allowing participants to relax, discuss and benefit from the time to connect as a community.
The event was conceived and planned by a student team made up of Hamza Keurti, Daniela Macari, Nima Mahkam, Julian Nubert, Malte Prinzler and Paul Wrede, with further organisation by Natalia Marciniak from the ETH AI Center. Many thanks go to the organising team! Image credit: Julian Nubert.
